In April 2013, U.S.-Austrian photographer and filmmaker Norbert Schiller, U.S. filmmaker Dana Smillie, and I visited locations of the Holy Family in Upper Egypt that we had previously visited for the preparation of the book Be Thou There; the Holy Family’s Journey in Egypt (AUC Press, 2001). Between January 8 and 12 we continued our tour along Holy Family sites in the Delta. These are locations Egyptian Christians believe the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus visited according to the Gospel of Matthew 2. The Bible mentions Egypt with no specific locations, but Coptic Orthodox tradition fills in this gap.
