On January 14^th and 15^th Egyptians cast their votes in the constitutional referendum. The official results presented by the High Elections Committee showed a 98.1% ‘yes’ vote with a turnout rate of 38.6%.[i] These results followed an aggressive media campaign in support of the constitution. To many observers, however, the campaign was quite misleading; it presented the referendum not as a vote on the constitution but as an endorsement of the political state of the country. Media discussions lacked diversity of opinion and at times directly took the side of security forces. In addition, state institutions joined the campaign rallying for the constitution, which questions their necessary neutrality. Finally, both Muslim and Christian leaders rallied for the constitution while employing religious vocabulary.
