In December of each year the villages of Damietta in Beheira keep an eye on the preparations for Abū Hasīrah feast in the village. Jews from all over the world attend this feast to drink and practice rites alien to those of the Egyptian people, according to the paper. The celebration starts with an auction for the key of the shrine after which heavy drinking, dancing, and clothe-tearing follows. The villagers usually do not leave their houses and children stop going to school at that time. Damanhur city however, witnesses a lot of protests against this celebration. On the other hand, political factions continue to refuse the celebrations of the ‘Abū Hasīrah feast and demand that the rulings of Egyptian courts against holding these celebrations are applied (Nasr al-Lakānī, al-Wafd, Dec. 15, p. 11). Read original text in Arabic.
