Father Antonius ‘Azīz, Catholic Bishop of Giza and the Catholic Church’s representative in the Constituent Assembly, said that he agrees with keeping Article 2 in the Constitution and the amended Article 3 which guarantees that all non-Muslims can follow their own laws, not only Christians and Jews.

When asked his opinion regarding the criticisms that the Church faced when a religious man, not a legal specialist, was appointed to the Constitutional Assembly, he said that he initially agreed that it should have been a legal specialist. He then changed his mind and understood that the Church would then not be represented accurately if that were the case, so instead the religious representative has legal personalities helping him with legal matters outside of the Constituent Assembly (Mustafā Rahūmah, al-Watan, Sept. 5, p.7). Read original text in Arabic.
