While some Egyptian Christians - angry over deadly sectarian clashes in Imbābah - called for international protection for Copts, others slammed such a call as being alien to patriotism.

Some Copts argue that the Egyptian authorities cannot protect them from attacks by other Egyptian sects. Other Copts say that Muslims and Christians are partners in Egypt and that it is illogical to ask for foreign support on this issue. They fear a dangerous turn in Muslim-Christian relations.

In the city of Alexandria Muslims and Christians protested against suggested international protection, shouting “Your brethren Muslims are for a civil state, where your rights are fully preserved”.
