‘Alī follows Jamāl Mansūr, a Coptic resident of ‘Umrāniyyah, throughout the election day. Jamāl says the reason he voted for the National Democratic Party candidate is because the latter visited the church during his campaign and distributed campaign flyers, insisting that religion has nothing to do with his vote. He even says that he would vote for a Muslim Brotherhood candidate if it was in the district’s best interest. At the butcher shop where Jamāl works, a conversation about the election sparks a discussion about the ‘Umrāniyyah riots. He then goes to the local barber, who is completely oblivious to the elections.
