In regards to the controversy surrounding his recent comments questioning a verse in the Qur'ān, Bishop Bīshūy said that the pope had nothing to do with his decision to issue a statement clarifying his intentions behind the comments. He said that the booklet containing the comments contains a printing error that changed the text’s meaning. He said that he has always been against attacking Islam and that there are several television appearances by him supporting that.
