In a fit of anger at Ḥilmī Sālim’s poem ‘Shurfat Laylá Murād’ [The Balcony of Laylá Murād], Shaykh Yūsuf al-Badrī has sued both the poet and Mr. ‘Abd al-Mu‘tī Ḥijāzī, editor-in-chief of the literary Ibdā‘ magazine, for publishing it. The author – Abū al-‘Ilā – affirms that freedom of expression should be respected by all, saying that the issue reflects a complete lack of dialogue between cultural figures and men of religion.
