The assassination of Theo van Gogh resulted in a debate in Dutch media about the limits of the freedom of expression. Van Gogh himself specialized in offensive language against religion; his words were deliberately calculated to hurt people. Others, found van Gogh had gone too far, misused the freedom of expression to offend others in the most extreme way possible. It is good Egypt has a law prohibiting offensive language against Islam, Christianity and Judaism. There is no doubt that when language goes beyond expressing differences in opinion and becomes biting, hurting people’s deepest feelings and hate-mongering, it should be punishable by law. Murder is never an answer and people who feel offended should find other ways to deal with those offences.
