When hardline Sheikh Abdel Sabur Sahin was fighting a fierce battle to declare professor Nasr Hamed Abu Zeid a renegade and separate him from his wife, judge Gabr Ibrahim Gabr of Cairo Court was fighting a similar battle by banning Youssef Chahine’s controversial film "The Immigrant". Shahin and Gabr upheld similar principles and fought side by side: the first used his religious authority to intimidate whoever challenged the mainstream and the second used his judicial powers to fetter creativity in the name of the law. But these two comrades-at-arms recently turned into deadly foes.
