Cairo said that it did not request a meeting between Egyptian President ‘Abd al-Fatāh al-Sīsī and President of the German Parliament during al-Sīsī’s upcoming visit to Germany. This came in an irate statement released by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry responding to the announcement of the President of the German Parliament, Norbert Lammert, that he would be cancelling his scheduled meeting with al-Sīsī. The announcement explained that Lammert had decided to cancel the meeting due to human rights abuses committed in Egypt, specifically the death sentence given to former president Muhammad Mursī.
